Platform Issue: "Commit to be Fit"
In our world today, there is a lot of media attention given to adult health issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes to name a few. These diseases generally affect adults; however, lack of physical activity and poor nutrition habits at an early age are leading causes to these diseases. With children being our future, it is imperative to educate them at a young age about the significance of making healthy life choices by committing to be fit.

As Miss UNCP, it is my objective to promote my platform "Commit To Be Fit" by providing an action plan in my own community. This plan involves visiting local schools and informing students about making healthy food choices and getting involved in activities they enjoy. In the State of North Carolina, 20% of children between the ages of 10-17 suffer from obesity; a rate that is 5% higher than the national rate. However, I do not feel that children are to blame; instead it is the lack of education they have received in this subject area. It is also essential for families to be a part of the solution of committing to be fit. Parents need to become role models for wholesome lifestyle behaviors. Children growing up in this type of healthy environment are more likely to become healthy adults.

It is my goal to get members in the community and schools involved in increasing physical activity and improving nutrition in youth. If we provide an action plan to move these children toward a healthy weight, it is my belief we will succeed. My platform "Commit To Be Fit" is a challenge to all constituents of Robeson County to show today's youth the promise of a healthier tomorrow.

PLATFORM: "Facing The Giants; Coping With Teenage Bullying"

Teenage Bullying is very common among high school students and not taken seriously by school officials or parents alike. It is considered by adults as part of growing up but when you remember the Columbine massacre in 1999 and most recently the Virginia Tech massacre, bullying is more than just a phase that adolescents are going through. Coping with teenage bullying requires involvement on the part of schools, parents, teachers and students. I would like to encourage administrators, teachers and parents to take bullying seriously and become more involved by providing support and protection for all students. Clear rules against bullying should be enforced with strict consequences. I would also like to challenge students to campaign being "Bully Free" by not being a victim or a bully themselves.
