How fast the time flies.......

I am sure everyone has heard the expression, "Time flies when you are having fun", well not only do I believe it, but I am living it! Since the last time I wrote, I have traveled to four different states and seen many of the hidden treasures of our own great State! I had the distinct privilege of crowning the new Little Miss North Carolina Queens. The night was filled with a flurry of excitement as I was chauffeured in a limousine, accompanied by the appointed judges of the pageant and then received an overwhelming welcome into the pageant venue. The hustle and bustle backstage reminded me of the excitement and anticipation...the feeling of "pre-pageant fever" I felt just thirty-six short days before! Each of the young ladies crowned at Little Miss are all beautiful and talented and will represent North Carolina with style and grace. I feel honored that they will travel with me to several appearances during my reign. We will make a great team.

The following morning I flew from RDU to catch what I thought would be a 1:55 PM connecting flight out of Philadelphia to Burlington,Vermont. Much to my surprise, due to inclement weather, the planned, short, layover turned into a ten hour excursion through the terminals of Philadelphia International Airport. I made the best of the long layover and caught up on some reading and letter writing.

Upon my arrival in Vermont I learned some sad news. The architect and manager of the Caleb Retreat Center, where I was to stay, had lost his life to ALS. It was at this point that I knew I had been put in Vermont for a special purpose. I was supposed to be there at that time in that place. I could make a difference as I can sympathize and empathize with anyone who has lost a loved one to this tragic disease. One of the highlights of my trip was meeting a young girl named Maria. She shared with me that she and her mom had traveled over two hours to hear me sing and speak about ALS. This young lady had recently lost her father, and yet she distinguished herself through her courageous and gracious attitude. My heart was full as we said goodbye. Little did she know how she touched my life as well. I smile each time I think of her and will always remember her story.

I am excited to be heading to Fort Bragg on Friday to experience a helicopter simulator and to take part in some aircraft activities. Saturday I am traveling to Gastonia to support Aryn Ward and Sarah Portela as they give up their titles and crown two new Queens who will have the opportunity to begin their journey to Miss NC! My future travels will include a trip to Orlando to watch our very own Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen Mya Hipps compete for the title of Miss America's Outstanding Teen. Go Mya!

One important lesson I have learned during my days of holding the title of Miss NC is the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others~Gandhi. I lose and find myself each and every day, and I love every minute of it! Thank you, North Carolina, for giving me the opportunity to serve. Until next time....
