Wilson native Trudy Riley remains the only Miss North Carolina ever crowned in Wilson. At nineteen, she wore a crown of tin foil, cardboard and a garland of roses because metal was being rationed for the war. Trudy performed a radio skit conceived by Elmer Oettinger and noted entertainer Kay Kyser at the Miss America Pageant, and was coached by Kyser’s cover girl wife “Gorgeous Georgia” Carroll.
