Hilda was born in Goldsboro but lived most of her life in the Wilmington area. After her year as MIss North Carolina, she moved to New York City and became a well known singer and songwriter. Partnering with Ben Raleigh. she co-penned two well-known blues songs “Three-Handed Women” and “Beggin’ Women Blues” -the latter recorded by Prince on his 2008 album, Indigo Nights.
