Ruth McClean Covington is considered the first “official” Miss North Carolina. The 1937 pageant was sponsored by the American Legion and began Miss North Carolina’s history. Ruth was first runner-up in the bathing beauty contest at Charlotte’s Williamette Swimming Pool but when the winner decided to go to college, Ruth assumed the state title. As Miss North Carolina, Ruth tapped and sang to “Goona Goo” and was second runner-up to Miss America.
